Cultured Ghee is a traditional form of ghee, prepared from cultured organic butter. During the culturing process, the milk solids contained within the butter change just like when milk is cultured into yogurt. The sugar in the milk solids, in the form of lactose, is converted to lactic acid. The cultured butter is then slowly cooked until all water is removed and remaining cultured milk solids are lightly toasted, and the oil within the butter—the ghee—is poured off and strained. The fermentation process used to prepare cultured ghee adds a slightly sour taste.
We culture our organic butter with certified organic buttermilk for 3-4 days before heating and turning the concoction into ghee. Spring Sunrise Natural Foods began as a small family food business in Fairfield, Iowa, in 1992, named after a watercolor painting called “A Spring Sunrise” by the founders’ son.
What started in a home kitchen has grown into a solar-powered facility, still rooted in the same care and tradition that shaped the company from the start. Today, Spring Sunrise produces premium ghee the traditional way: slow-cooking grass-fed butter for hours to bring out its rich, nutty flavor.
Using time-honored slow-cooking methods and grass-fed butter from American farms, each jar captures the rich, nutty flavor and natural benefits of ghee at its purest. Produced in a solar-powered kitchen and packaged without plastic, Spring Sunrise combines traditional quality with modern sustainability.
Today, production takes place just outside of town in a solar-powered facility surrounded by the rolling farmland of the Midwest. Every jar of ghee is slow-cooked in small batches, reflecting both the agricultural heritage of the region and the family’s dedication to food made with integrity.
